"I nudge my bags forward, mentally rehearsing what to say. When I reach the counter, I hand over my passport and plane ticket. My heart beats faster, but I smile as though nothing’s wrong." —Grace Loh Prasad, excerpted from her forthcoming memoir, The Translator's Daughter.

In this excerpt from her book "We Are Not Okay" Christian Livermore writes about the shame she will forever carry for growing up poor:
"Nobel laureate Amartya Sen tells us that shame lies at the core of poverty. Anyone who grew up poor instinctively knows this to be true. She feels that shame every minute of every day, in the background if she is feeling good, in her face if she is not."
While on the subject of #JerryPinto, and The Education of Yuri, there are couple of instances of casual, almost facile, deconstruction of #Bollywood movies - incidentally my earliest memories of Pinto's writings from TOI's Sunday Times, involve his total decimation of the culture of conformity being pushed but the two biggest hits of the time, DDLJ askst HAHK - through his character's dialogs. Delightful book. #books #BookExcerpts

Wrong position of hands when asked to exit the vehicle. Wrong health insurance—or none. Wrong attitude to the police officer"
“(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” — I used to listen to that song and try to imagine its counterpart. You could make someone feel like a “real” man—no doubt its own kind of cage—but never a natural one. A man was a man was a man. He bent nature to his will. He did not submit to it, except in death. Submission to nature was to be my realm, but I wanted no part of that.
#ZadieSmith on being a woman.
