У нас было 3 Винчестера 73, 7 Писмейкеров, нож Боуи, геологический молоток, кисточка и легендарный томагавк делаверов от толедских мастеров. Не то, чтобы всё это необходимо, чтобы раскапывать динозавров, но если начал костяные войны - то иди в своем увлечении до конца. Единственное, что меня беспокоило - это кисточка. Нет ничего более беспомощного, ответственного и безнравственного, чем палеонтолог, очищающий кисточкой окаменелости под свинцовым огнём критики конкурентов. И я знал, что довольно скоро мы в это окунёмся.

If not, this book by Jane Kurtz is the perfect primer to introduce any budding dinosaur fan to this infamous period in the history of paleontology! I’m particularly fond of the deliberately retro designs for the dinosaurs, which appear as #CopeandMarsh would have envisioned them. 🦕📖🦖

Since Cope and Marsh got brought up yesterday, let's talk about the timing of the Bone Wars.

Three factors influenced access to these famous fossil beds, first being the US Civil War. When violence broke out between the Union and Confederacy, many of the wealthy (including most US scientists) ran for the hills. Or, in the case of Cope, Europe. Marsh spent the War as a staff member to Generals Meade and Grant, seeing combat at the Battle of Vicksburg.
