The Thunderbirds fly to support recruitment and reinforce public confidence in the Air Force among other things.
The F16's that these pilots fly are nothing less than spectacular.
The highly skilled pilots must be recommended for the team by superior officers and go through rigorous training to be able to perform with the Thunderbirds. The audience was 100,000 strong.

I recently took in an air show at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield California featuring the US Air Force Thunderbirds. They are always a thrill to watch and this was the first time that they have flown in the area in three years.

Union Pacific 4466

The Union Pacific 4466 began its life in October 1920 to perform switching duty and transfer runs.

She was finally retired for good in 1999 due to new regulations by the state of After performing various services she was retired due to California banning operations of coal fired steam engines.
Now she sits in the locomotive barn wonderfully preserved but with no place to go.

Golden Gate in the Fog II

On this day I started my walk at the east end of Crissy Fields and headed towards the Golden Gate Bridge as the fog started in. By the time we get even close to the bridge the fog had at times completely hidden it. I really like this image because it instantly tells you where the image was taken but it also gives a sense of atmosphere that many times you just won't see.

Cable Car at the Powell Street Turnaround

One of first things someone thinks about when you mention San Francisco is the iconic San Francisco Cable Cars. These cable cars have been part of San Francisco since 1873.
I captured this scene when the area was lit up for the Christmas season as can be seen with the white lights strung on the trees that line the street.

Painted Ladies

This is an image of the famed "Painted Ladies" at Alamo Square in San Francisco. They have been seen in the movie "Misses Doubtfire", the show "Full House" and many other televised shows.
They truly are a sight to see, as if they are all standing in front of an audience waiting to be judged. Downtown San Francisco serves as the background.

It's late autumn in Yosemite and life is slowing down in the valley.
The majestic waterfalls that Yosemite Valley is known for have all but stopped flowing as the watershed that they draw from have dried up due to the long, hot, dry summer.
The now still waters of the Merced River become a mirror reflecting the valley from all sides.

Electric Peak

This image is a capture of the Gallatin Mountain Range in Yellowstone National Park and more specifically, is a capture of Electric Peak as a summer storm is held up behind it.
The wide-open landscape of this area of the park is so incredible, the sight lines go on forever. It's no wonder that they say Montana is big sky country.

Morning at the Pt Reyes
The Pt. Reyes is a fishing boat that ran aground many years ago in Tamales Bay in Marin County just north of San Francisco.
She has sat on a sandbar ever since slowly decaying. The paint on the boat is fading to prolonged exposure and lack of maintenance. The Tomales Bay and the hills of Marin County serve as a backdrop for this derelict fishing boat.

The Edge

This is a closeup image of the Yellowstone River as it flows over the top of the Lower Yellowstone falls.
I shot this as a closeup in order to try to capture the magnificent power of this river.
There are several shades of green dependent on the depth of the river. Going from a dark green to white as the water flows over the edge.
