Kate Robertson, Senior Researcher at the Citizen Lab provided a submission to the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Veterans Affairs, that contributes to the ongoing consideration of Bill C-26, which seeks to give the federal government the power to impose cybersecurity regulations on telecom and critical infrastructure providers in Canada.

On November 7, two bills that make enormous progress toward establishing a meaningful right to repair in Canada have become law after receiving royal assent. Bills C-244 and C-294 are complementary private members’ bills that amend the Copyright Act in relation to technological protection measures (TPMs).
Two new bills will amend the Copyright Act to protect consumers’ right to repair their possessions. But more work is needed, including ensuring that manufacturers make their devices repairable.
