Loaded up #BeatSlayer once again. Immediately stumbled upon a small bug I never noticed before but that I recently fixed in our own game - Beat Slayer is made in #Unity, too. Maybe I should send an applicatio... ah right. I already did.
Finally started #Hades for #videogameclub #vgcaugust2024. It's shockingly similar to #BeatSlayer which I really liked just without the rhythm elements. And by similar I mean Beat Slayer is probably a copy of Hades plus rhythm elements. Like, even the UI looks similar. Unfortunately for Hades, I like Beat Slayer more. I like the rhythm elements and its UI works better on #SteamDeck. In Hades, all text is a little too small.
I finished #BeatSlayer! Great game. First rogue like I finished, too! It recently got an update allowing you to further upgrade your permanent skills and introducing more non-permanent upgrades and will receive two more larger updates this year. If you like techno or rhythm games or rogue likes, give it a try!
A thing I really like about #BeatSlayer is how many lines they put in for all the characters. It really helps me celebrate every run I manage to finish and deal a little better with every one I don't. I'm pretty good by now, but they're not screwing around, enemies get stronger faster than I can.
Through a chain beginning with #BeatSlayer and going over a DJ set Youtube recommended me, I found "Pump up the jam" by Technotronic, a 1989 house (or techno depending on definition) track that's pretty catchy. Might very well be a reference in the game, as it's all based around listening to techno music in Berlin (Technotronic are from Belgium though).
yesss I finally beat #BeatSlayer for the first time. Seeing some progress in my skill, too. This also comes with seeing my mistakes instead of guessing, which is satisfying in a way. #rhythmGames
One can perform some quite interesting analyses with this game. For example, a #GameDesign principle I really like is introducing one thing at a time. They do well with presenting new enemies isolated in the first few levels, but from act 2, it gets chaotic. I did notice new enemy types, but due to the amount of other enemies, I could not really observe them, which makes the game harder and also makes me appreciate them less. #BeatSlayer
Having a lot of fun with #BeatSlayer. It still has some minor bugs, but the devs are apparently working on it. I can however currently not play it on the #SteamDeck, which is a real bummer. It's shockingly resource hungry and therefore does not run on Full HD in desktop mode. In Steam mode, where res is reduced by default, it used to run but now it crashes. Hrmpf. I feel confirmed in not buying games when they are new. If those bugs get fixed I'll get a lot of play time out of that game though.

The only thing that is a bit odd is that I needed to turn the music volume way up and all the other volumes down to hear the music enough to hit the beats. Bit weird for a rhythm game to default to a rather low music volume.

Also, if you consider playing the demo: I don't know if savegames can be transfered to the full game but you can save and load in the demo. #BeatSlayer
