A dispute that led to teachers at BIMM music college striking for several days earlier this month has been resolved with workers voting - "by a massive majority" according to their union - to accept a deal.

Ruth Coppinger on Instagram: "Day 1 on strike for BIMM lecturers who are demanding that management engages with IFUT members and mitigates the austerity measures that are being proposed which will affect 50 staff members. The private equity fund that manages BIMM is pulling a classic tactic of firing workers and forcing them to reapply for paltry wages, refusing from the jump to engage with IFUT. Workers are determined to strike until these changes are reversed and everyone should come out and support them."

[07:41] Music college BIMM and its link to TU Dublin

Music college BIMM on Dublin's Francis Street has a strong reputation but the fact it is a private college linked to TU Dublin may come as news to many of its students, writes Emma O Kelly.

Industrial Action at BIMM Dublin

I heard today that after a strike ballot, members of the Irish Federation of University Teachers at the BIMM Institute in Dublin (Francis Street, Dublin 8) will be taking industrial action from Monday 10th February in response to proposed redundancies. The proposed dates are:

  • Monday, 10th February                  From 0830 to 1600
  • Tuesday, 11th February                 From 0830 to 1600
  • Saturday, 15th February (Open Day)  Time to be confirmed
  • Wednesday, 19th February              From 0830 to 1600
  • Thursday, 20th February                From 0830 to 1600

I understand the students at BIMM are organizing demonstrations in support of staff threatened with redundancy. As an IFUT member I wish to take the opportunity provided by this blog express solidarity with those taking part in industrial action and hope for a negotiated resolution to the dispute. I am not based in Dublin, so I can’t attend the picket lines in person to show support on weekdays, but I am planning to attend on Saturday 15th February. I will also be wearing my IFUT badge…

One of my kids is making signs to protest this morning in solidarity with their lecturers in the #BIMM music school in Dublin.

Neoliberalism kicking in as they've begun lunatic plans to cut one-third of lecturer jobs and force all lecturers to reapply for their jobs on lower wages.

Background: BIMM was acquired by Intermediate Capital Group in 2020 who've begun to transform it from a vibrant city-centre cultural hub to a sweated degree mill.
