AI is consuming processing power at a scale that's driving up costs for everyone.
I feel it personally. I'm trying to build local-first AI infrastructure and can't afford the hardware because the market is being shaped by data centers running models at massive scale.
I also use AI every day.
Both things are true.
The answer isn't to stop using AI.
It's to build it differently —
smaller, local, distributed,
not dependent on whoever owns the biggest data center

Lack of access to education. Lack of privacy. Lack of genuine representation. Lack of infrastructure that serves rather than extracts.

Mayo Clinic is using "Ambient Listening" AI to record emergency room patients interacting with nurses.
Patient consent apparently isn't a concern.
You are in crisis.
You are vulnerable.
This is not innovation.
This is extraction from people
at their most defenseless.
Medical data is the most intimate data that exists.
The fact that an institution can decide
consent isn't required
is exactly why AI governance
cannot be left to the institutions using it.

A classroom of thirty students has one pace.
Too fast for some.
Too slow for others.
Right for almost no one.
The student who needs more time gets labeled slow.
The student who needs less gets labeled disruptive.
Neither label is true.
Both follow them.
We built an education system optimized for efficiency.
Not for learning.
The students who slip through aren't failures.
They're evidence of a structural problem
that we keep solving by blaming the individual.

Signal is threatening to leave Canada rather than comply with Bill C-22.
There's no such thing as a good backdoor.
Engineered vulnerabilities become attack surfaces for everyone.
This is why privacy can't live in an app. Apps can be pressured into compliance.
Privacy at the kernel level is different. You can't legislate a constitutional constraint out of a distributed network without replacing every node.
That's not defiance. That's architecture.

Closed source infrastructure makes decisions about your life.
Which loan you qualify for.
Whether your resume gets seen.
How your medical data gets used.
What information you're allowed to access.

You just live with the outcome.
When that infrastructure fails or exploits you — and it does — there's no way to prove it. No code to point to. No accountability without the owner's cooperation.
Closed source isn't just a licensing choice.
It's a power structure.

Teachers are asked to do the impossible
Reach every student. In one room. At the same pace. Regardless of how each individual learns.
When a student slips through the cracks
the teacher gets blamed.
The student gets labeled.
The system stays the same.
The problem was never the teachers or the students.
It was asking one person to be thirty different educators simultaneously.
Teachers are public servants and mentors.
They deserve better tools.
So do the students.
