Professor Paul Barclay kindly contributed another entry to my website, Grassroots Operations of the Japanese Empire!

https://www.japaneseempire.info/post/kond%C5%8D-the-barbarian-and-indigenous-peoples

This is based on his new wonderful publication, Kondo the Barbarian: A Japanese Adventurer and Indigenous Taiwan’s Bloodiest Uprising (https://camphorpress.com/books/kondo-the-barbarian/). The entry includes a VERY intriguing except from the series of articles telling Kondo's story.

Kondō the Barbarian and Taiwan's Indigenous Peoples

Introduction by Paul D. Barclay, Lafayette College Taiwan was annexed as a condition of the Treaty of Shimonoseki signed by the Qing and Japanese imperial governments on April 17, 1895. From the 1895 annexation through 1902, Han (Chinese) Taiwanese rebels fought sustained guerrilla campaigns against the new Japanese government in the western half of the island. Eastern Taiwan, including the island’s majestic Central Mountain Range, had largely eluded the control of the Qing dynasty. This part of

This turned out to be a very nerdy post. But basically, there were tons of Korean newspapers in Japan right after August 1945. Read Kobayashi Somei's book. But for now this list should help you orient yourself in the confusing alley of newspapers.

Basics for studying Zainichi society 2: Newspapers in early postwar

Right after August 15, 1945, Koreans living in Japan started publishing hundreds of periodicals. Read Kobayashi Sōmei's book for the rough sketch of the Korean media. This is a classic and informative read. The most basic thing to know is the names of 解放新聞 and 朝鮮新報. The leftist newspapers had a genealogy as follows. I hear our interviewees talking about 解放新聞 and 朝鮮新報 a lot. Leftist cadres often read 解放新聞 out loud in Korean neighborhoods (or slums) in various places because many were illiterate.

#introduction Hi, I'm an associate professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona. I'm especially interested in early modern Chinese fiction and print culture. My book, Bandits in Print, is about various print editions of the novel The Water Margin; it's coming out in April. I followed the #Asianist exodus here.
@cgoodhistorian when I was much younger, around 16, Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities. Had the honor of meeting him in Thammasat University during summer school. In graduate school, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's Other Asias and her other writings (Can the Subaltern Speak is important of course). #histodons #asianist #southeastasia
