Any other #histodons or #archaeology people see this?
The *possibility* of *an* advanced ancient civilization?!

Ancient conspiracy theory tv shows point to an inability to fathom that people (esp non-white people) in the past had sophisticated societies & technologies. It’s disturbing.

Fellow #histodons, I'm trying to decide whether to switch to hcommons.social from mastodon.social. Any thoughts/recommendations?
It turns out that continually refreshing the "live election results" tab for the #Nevada senate race has no impact on the speed with which the vote is counted.

#PhD students of #Mastodon, I have created a Mastadon group for sharing PhD-related posts using @phdstudents when posting a PhD student toot. Let's help the group to grow and share our PhD student experiences.

#introduction: I'm a #historian of the 19th century US in the world with a focus on religion and Protestant missions.

My first book, Christian Imperialism, examines the early foreign mission movement as a window into American thinking about empire during the era of the early republic.

I'm currently finishing up a new book: Missionary Diplomacy, which traces the connections between missions and American diplomacy in the long 19th century.

If you see me in real life, I'm probably #knitting

fwiw to help address the early "it's empty (t)here" trope, there are some hashtags and automated follow groups historians can be pointed to. There general ones I know of include #histodon #histodons #historian #historians (sigh, plurals) -- up to four hashtags can be put in a single pinned column in the "advanced" view of the default web client.

and a group to follow and tag: @histodons

@cgoodhistorian Mary Beaudry's 'Findings: The Material Culture of Needlework and Sewing' - ways to read domestic history into so-called 'minor finds' in colonial archaeological assemblages. It blew my mind, changed the way I thought about evidence for unwritten histories, and formed the backbone for my interdisciplinary PhD work on dress and textile artifacts.
A ✅ has appeared in my profile. Hurrah for that. I think we have to realise that the learning curve here is steepish, but rather than be anxious about it, shouldn’t we should celebrate the adventure of slowly finding out something that was puzzling at first? Like your first week at school or in a new office building. We’ll get there and soon laugh at how confused me were at first. I hope!
@mebrett
I really want somebody with more artistic talent then I possess to create a #histodons mascot that’s a mastodon Clio—with her book and pen attributes etc.
I’m seeing long-time Mastodon folks asking people to please PLEASE use CW on posts about political topics and then I’m seeing almost no one actually do that. It’s so important to keep up with the culture of this space that was established long before many of us got here. Just use the CW!!
