Klanten in tranen: 'Waar moeten we nu naartoe als we écht een persoonlijk boeket willen?'

De geur van verse bloemen hangt nog in de lucht bij bloemist Asarum in Leiden, maar klanten kunnen er niet lang meer terecht voor een boeket. De bloemenwinkel sluit op 18 juli voorgoed de deuren. Voor de eigenaren Menno van der Poel en Marco van Teylingen is het een hartverscheurend, maar onvermijdelijk besluit.

I love the hirsute, heart-shaped leaves of Canadian Wild Ginger almost as much as I love its flowers! This is one of the first species to emerge in my garden (and the local moist woodlands) each year. If you come across this plant in early spring, I encourage you to check at ground level for flowers!

My Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense) is blooming. An odd little plant that continues to perplex pollination ecologists: why the elaborate flower if primarily self-pollinated?

Seed dispersal is courtesy of ants (myrmecochory) who carry the seeds to their tunnels to eat a fatty bit (called an eliaosome) attached to the seed.

The somewhat surprising flower of #Asarum canadense, Canadian wild ginger. It grows on the ground, usually hidden under leaves, and is pollinated by beetles.
