Il Tempo: Mussini (Simit): "Contro antibiotico-resistenza implementare buone pratiche"

Venezia, 26 mar.

Mussini (Simit): "To combat antibiotic resistance, implement good practices."

Venice, March 26 (Adnkronos Salute) - “Regarding antimicrobial resistance, we have two projects. One is essentially a prevalence study where we not only provide data on how many people are affected by infections with resistant germs, but we also provide clinical guidance. We also have a project called ‘Insieme’ (Together), in which we coordinate 35 hospitals, which will soon become 50, to implement best clinical practices in an hub and spoke system, in order to improve infection control in Italy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.” This was stated by Cristina Mussini, President of Simit-Italian Society of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Diseases, Professor of Infectious Diseases at Modena and Director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of Modena at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, who illustrated the priorities of the scientific society to Adnkronos Salute, today in Venice, during the ‘Top5 in Infectious Diseases’ congress, which brings together the world’s leading experts in the field.

“Insieme coordinates the hospitals, so the idea is to create hubs of best clinical practices – Mussinini clarified – In our hospital in Modena, for example, ‘we have a prevalence of multi-resistant carbapenems that was around 2%, on 1,200 beds. We had a prevalence of 33%, so with targeted interventions, you can make a difference.’ Precisely ‘based on our experience’ – the expert added – we are carrying out this project at the Italian level. It’s not easy because it requires a multidisciplinary approach,” but it yields important results.

“Undoubtedly – Mussini continued – the idea is also to provide scientific information on the effectiveness of new antibiotics. On this, the Resistimit platform, providing clinical information, even clinical outcomes, will allow us to give an idea of the effectiveness of treatments in reality, i.e., not only in the ideal situation of trials, but also in everyday reality, of new drugs.”
