Ebola, Meloni at the top of the EU: “Strengthen border surveillance”

The Italian government, following the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, is asking the leaders of the European Union to strengthen border surveillance through common rules for managing arrivals from affected areas. This was done through a letter sent by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Ursula von der Leyen, Antonio Costa, respectively President of the European Commission and the Council of the EU, and Nikos Christodoulides, the current President of the European Union.

Chigi Palace: “The Ebola outbreak in Central Africa requires the utmost attention”

“Italy believes that the epidemiological situation in Central Africa related to the recent Ebola Bundibugyo Virus (BVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda requires the utmost attention.” This is what reads from a note from Chigi Palace.

Meloni to the EU: "Strengthen Border Surveillance"

“For this reason, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent a letter to the current President of the EU Nikos Christodoulides, to the President of the European Council António Costa and to the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The objective – it explains – is to urge, respecting national prerogatives in matters of health protection, strengthened coordination of border surveillance through common rules for the management of direct and indirect arrivals from affected areas.”

Meloni “proposed the inclusion of the issue of border management on the agenda of the European Council on June 18-19, 2026,” always explains Chigi Palace, adding that “in anticipation of this meeting, the Italian Government has asked to advance the coordination in question in a videoconference of Health Ministers next week and in the EPSCO Council on June 16 to define operational priorities.” Nationally, the Ministry of Health, “in coordination with Civil Protection, has issued circulars to activate targeted health surveillance and vigilance protocols for travelers returning from affected regions.”

In Palermo, Aifa is launching “The Appropriateness Roadmap.”

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – AIFA and ARS together with Palermo for the event “The Roadmap for Appropriateness: Precision Medicine between Innovation and Regional Practice”. An initiative of dialogue between the Agency and the regions, through two panels that allowed a review of the use of data and innovation in therapeutic decisions, as well as the common strategy that, at the regional level, can lead to the correct and sustainable use of the drug and its fair access. The proceedings were opened by the ARS President, Gaetano Galvagno, who brought the importance of the regional role to the attention of the audience in relation to the challenge of precision medicine: “In terms of healthcare, the virtuous means is appropriateness, a balance between ensuring access for citizens to the best treatments and the responsibility of preserving the national health system – Galvagno said –. Sicily is also called to the challenge of precision medicine and the need not to fall behind in the race for innovation, which must, however, be absolutely coordinated with dialogue at all levels.” “The institutional setting where this game is played for the future of Sicilians is also the regional assembly, called to translate national guidelines into regional laws regarding advanced pharmacotherapies,” he added. Giorgio Mulè, Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies, also spoke, explaining how “medicine 5.0 is fundamental to solve a cultural problem present in this country, building a screening system that precedes the excellence of precision medicine.” “Either we have the capability to perform screenings, or precision medicine will not be enough, despite being a remarkable driver for national medicine. We can and must talk about all of this if we have the ability to build a screening system that precedes the excellence of precision medicine.” Robert Giovanni Nisticò, President of AIFA, also spoke, emphasizing the theme of innovation and the sustainability of the pharmaceutical system: “Pharmaceutical spending is growing, so we need to work on tools that can also refine control and prescriptions for our patients – he said. “Italy is a long-lived country, where many drugs are used, but where perhaps more prevention and attention to appropriate prescribing are needed.” The focus was on the theme of pharmacogenomics, i.e., the interaction with tools such as algorithms and data to ensure that patients are at the center of their complexity and uniqueness through the integration of data from basic sciences. “If we can bring these innovative tools more and more – he emphasized – we will be able to protect patient health and contain pharmaceutical spending.” On the innovation front, “AIFA must promote research so that those who produce drugs can do so in the best way. The use of artificial intelligence is a strong tool for the pharmaceutical industry, and AIFA must accompany this process and understand how it is used by our partners,” said Giovanni Pavesi, Administrative Director of AIFA. Finally, the intervention of Marcello Gemmato, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, who reiterated the importance of sustainability in a system where “more and more impactful drugs are being introduced into commerce from an economic point of view, but which solve the symptomatic picture of even serious diseases.” “The collaboration between AIFA and the Regions – he continued – is fundamental, for this reason a series of scattered interlocutions have been imagined throughout the territory, from Lombardy to Sicily. An exercise of AIFA’s perception towards the regions but also towards the scientific and university community. All of this – Gemmato concluded – with the objective of caring for the citizen better, maintaining as a horizon the sustainability of our system as envisioned and outlined by the founding fathers of the Constitution in Article 32.

Italian surgeon exposed to Ebola in Congo, the woman is not presenting symptoms but will be transferred to Spallanzani.

After coming into contact with some patients later found to be positive for Ebola, an Italian surgeon serving at the health center in Salmat, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been transferred to Italy.
The return, as communicated by the Ministry of Health, is taking place “in total safety.” The woman, a worker for Doctors Without Borders, will be monitored at Spallanzani in Rome, where she will undergo precautionary quarantine and all necessary diagnostic tests.
According to information leaked, the surgeon would not present symptoms attributable to the virus. The transfer was however ordered because, as part of her clinical activity, she had come into contact with some patients who were later infected with Ebola on May 16th.
Italian surgeon exposed to Ebola in Congo, the woman does not have symptoms but will be transferred to Spallanzani.
But that’s not all. Two days later, on May 18th, the doctor also performed an urgent life-saving surgery on a child injured in a grenade explosion. The child, however, already presented some symptoms compatible with the virus and had been classified as a “suspected Ebola case.”
The note issued by the Ministry of Health also specifies that there are currently no cases of Ebola in Italy and that the alert level, as reaffirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO), remains very low both in our country and throughout the European Union.

Ebola, a doctor returns to Italy after direct contact. “In quarantine at Spallanzani”

AGI - Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, contact with positive patients for the virus and the safe return to Italy for a surgeon. Then quarantine at Spallanzani in Rome. The Ministry of Health informs that activities are underway for the safe return of a female surgeon who operated at the health center in Salamat (Bunia-Ituri), in the Democratic Republic of Congo, during the current Ebola epidemic.

Ebola, Surgeon from Doctors Without Borders Returns to Italy
Authorization for return has been signed in Rome. The surgeon is a field operative for Doctors Without Borders. During her clinical activity, the surgeon came into contact with patients who later tested positive on May 16th. This is a case of direct contact.

The Doctor Will Be Taken to Spallanzani in Rome Today
The doctor also performed an urgent life-saving surgical procedure on a child victim of a grenade explosion on May 18th. The child is an Ebola suspect for which a test is still pending. The doctor is not showing symptoms at this time. The returning doctor will arrive in Rome today. She will be taken to Spallanzani in Rome for the necessary quarantine and active surveillance.

There Are No Ebola Cases in Italy
The Ministry of Health reminds that there are currently no Ebola cases in Italy and that the alarm is very low in our country. The Ministry is active from the first moment for all preparedness and surveillance activities and is continuing to monitor the evolution of the epidemiological picture in coordination with the territories and national and local health authorities.

The Farnesina: “€1.1 million for humanitarian aid”
To support the immediate humanitarian response to the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Italian cooperation has allocated a funding of 1,150,000 euros. A contribution decided by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who ordered the funding with an act signed by Vice Minister Edmondo Cirielli. The Farnesina reported this in a note.

The funding will be made available to Italian civil society organizations with an operational presence in the provinces affected of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.

It involves immediate interventions to stop the transmission of Ebola, strengthen epidemiological surveillance, local health system response and the trust of communities in containment measures indicated by the World Health Organization.

Resources will focus on four priority areas identified by the United Nations agencies Ocha and Oms for the prevention and control of infections; epidemiological surveillance and contact tracing; immediate health assistance and community involvement.

Humanitarian Initiatives Already in Progress
This funding adds to two ongoing humanitarian initiatives funded by Italian Cooperation for a total value of 5.5 million euros for five projects carried out by civil society in the eastern provinces.

Direct Support to WHO
Italian Cooperation will also directly contribute with a support of 290 thousand euros to the crisis response action launched by the World Health Organization.

The Fleet Between Israel and Libya

On Sunday afternoon, ten activists from the Global Sumud Land Convoy crossed the Sirte checkpoint with two cars and an ambulance, to negotiate with the authorities of eastern Libya the restart of the convoy, which had been stalled for eight days in a neutral zone. On the other side, they were waiting for the militants of the 604th Brigade of Khalifa Haftar, with snipers and machine guns. Passports were handed over, the live stream was interrupted. From that moment on, the Italian spokesperson for the Global Sumud Flotilla, Maria Elena Delia, told ANSA, “contacts have been lost.”

Among the ten were two Italians, Domenico Centrone, 33 years old from Molfetta, and Leonarda Alberizia, from Albugnano in the province of Asti. The convoy from which they broke off counted two hundred and fifty people, seven ambulances, ten trucks, and aimed to reach Gaza through Cyrenaica and Rafah.

The Crisis Unit of the Farnesina (Italian Foreign Ministry) announced on Sunday night that it had “launched investigations.” Antonio Tajani had on Thursday, May 21st, asked Kaja Kallas for European sanctions against Itamar Ben Gvir over the Ashdod video. It remained silent on the Sirte case.

Haftar is not an unknown quantity for Rome. On June 11, 2025, Minister Matteo Piantedosi received his son Saddam, commander of the Tareq Ben Zayed brigade, at the Viminale (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Fanpage documented the Italian plan supported by the European Commission to open a maritime coordination center in Benghazi that would extend expulsions to Cyrenaica. For the second year, the Mattei Plan envisages the final of the Libyan football championship in Italy.

In Nuseirat, on Sunday morning, an Israeli missile struck an apartment in the refugee camp. Mohammad Abu Mallouh, 38, Alaa Zaqlan, 36, and his son Osama, one year old, died. Since the ceasefire of October 10, 2025, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, reported by Reuters, the Israeli army has killed eight hundred and eighty Palestinians.

The naval blockade to the east, the checkpoint to the west. Between the two, two interlocutors whom the Farnesina knows by name.

Crisi Electrolux, governo e sindacati contro l’azienda

Ebola, alarm cleared for two suspected cases at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital. Bertolaso’s anger: “Alarmism was to be avoided.”

Virological tests performed at the Sacco Hospital reference laboratory in Milan came back negative. This was communicated yesterday evening by the Regional Welfare Councilor, Guido Bertolaso, with regard to the two suspected cases, reported in the early hours of the day and hospitalized with symptoms compatible with Ebola virus infection. The patients, a 31-year-old and a 33-year-old, tested negative for Ebola, as well as for malaria and the main respiratory viruses currently monitored.

The two, along with another five compatriots, were part of an international cooperative group recently returned to Italy after having “provided assistance in Uganda for approximately three months,” Bertolaso explained, and “during the night they had manifested symptoms such as high fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea with a slight neurological component.” Yesterday evening, the sigh of relief.

“The clinical condition of the two subjects remains under observation. In light of the initial diagnostic results – Bertolaso continued – one of the hypotheses currently considered is an infection of bacterial origin affecting the gastrointestinal tract.” However, the councilor pointed out the leak of information, which had created alarm: “If this morning the correct timelines and procedures had been respected – the councilor concluded – an unwarranted media alarm could have been avoided, which has resulted in a considerable deployment of resources and operational activities.”

Pregliasco: “Thanks to Covid, we are now better prepared”

According to virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco, the activation of “health monitoring towards some subjects returning from Uganda demonstrates how the Italian infectious disease preparedness system is today particularly attentive to international scenarios.”

“At this moment, global attention is focused on the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a context that requires strengthened surveillance, especially for travelers coming from affected or neighboring areas,” says the virologist.

“Today we have a national network much more prepared than in the past, thanks to the experience gained during the Covid-19 pandemic and the continuous coordination systems between the Ministry of Health, the Superior Institute of Health, the Regions and reference centers such as Sacco and Spallanzani. The situation is constantly monitored at the European level through the Health Security Committee of the EU Commission.”

“Therefore, it is correct to maintain high vigilance, but without creating alarm: at the current level, the risk to the Italian population remains very low and the healthcare system is fully operational to identify and manage suspected cases promptly,” Pregliasco emphasizes. The risk for our country, reassure officials, “remains very low.”
