The arctic outflow is hitting hard tonight in my area. My hens have a small-ish safe-pen attached to their hen house that I built after the bob cat attack. It is completely enclosed with a roof. Yesterday we attached greenhouse plastic around the pen to stop the wind from blowing in through the cracks of the hen house and give them a safe place to peck around out of the wind during the day.
I'm so glad we did that as the winds are brutal tonight. The wind chill factor is almost 10 degrees colder than the actual temp. I don't know if the bees will survive but I've done what I can for them. As for the hens, I put extra straw in their house, and gave them some wheat this afternoon to peck in addition to their layer pellets.

They also have a heated water thing inside that gives off a tiny amount of heat. The hen house is big enough with ventilation along the eves so humidity is not a problem. But even with their fluffy coats, I would not want to be a chicken tonight.

Heavy snow in forecast for North Okanagan, Shuswap and Thompson

A special weather statement is in effect for the North Okanagan, including Vernon, Kamloops, North Thompson,  Shuswap, West Columbia, North Columbia and Kinbasket.

Global News

It looks like my area and quite a few others in BC are going to get a sudden severe cold period starting Monday and lasting at least a week. Now is the time to prepare for that. Since our snow has melted in most areas, there is no protection other than fallen leaves for plants. Extra coverage inside greenhouses. Make sure your livestock waterers are checked everyday. Don't take the wraps off your bees. Do what you can to insulate water pipes if you had problems during the last cold period. Check your firewood supply, make sure your chimney is in good shape especially if you've been burning wood that is not fully seasoned. Be prepared in case some unrelated thing interrupts your power. If you rely solely on electricity for heating and cooking, even a short power outage is misery in deeply cold temps, so have alternatives. Continue to practice situational awareness. Keep in eye on your neighbourhood and help where it's needed.

@pcarlson001 good morning, Pam.👋 If you're off for a hike, lucky you.

We were supposed to get heavy snow but it just looks like someone spilled a tablespoon or two of icing sugar on the floor. Yay!
Mind you, we have an Arctic Outflow warning, bitterly cold temperatures, Wind Chill Values: Minus 25, but since I have no plans to leave my domicile I'm like "cool". 😎
And hopefully the power stays on, I might make Cookies! Hah.
