The Intersection of Encryption and AI - Schneier on Security

As part of their 20th Anniversary celebration, Dark Reading asked five cybersecurity industry leaders who wrote blogs or columns for them over the years to select their favorite piece and share their reflections on the topic today. This is my section. Renowned technologist and author Bruce Schneier contributed a column on June 20, 2010, warning about cryptography’s inability to secure modern networks, a point he says he has been trying to argue since 2000. “For a while now, I’ve pointed out that cryptography is singularly ill-suited to solve the major network security problems of today: denial-of-service attacks, website defacement, theft of credit card numbers, identity theft, viruses and worms, DNS attacks, network penetration, and so on...

Where can I find the French government's recommendations for cryptographic algorithms? Which algorithms to use, which key sizes, parameters and so on, and until when they are recommended to be used. Much like the U.S. NIST SP 800-175 or the German BSI TR-02102. Which institution is publishing these recommendations?

Microsoft Is Finally Killing RC4 - Schneier on Security

After twenty-six years, Microsoft is finally upgrading the last remaining instance of the encryption algorithm RC4 in Windows. of the most visible holdouts in supporting RC4 has been Microsoft. Eventually, Microsoft upgraded Active Directory to support the much more secure AES encryption standard. But by default, Windows servers have continued to respond to RC4-based authentication requests and return an RC4-based response. The RC4 fallback has been a favorite weakness hackers have exploited to compromise enterprise networks. Use of RC4 played a ...

@todd_a_jacobs @protonprivacy As a #thinktank, we often take on interesting topics that focus on #cybersecurity through a non-mainstream lens. As an organization we don't promote specific tools or vendors, but we certainly address how and why certain approaches to business and societal challenges can be addressed. Interviews, journal articles, and case studies on how #appliedcryptography can impact the common good over the next few decades would be a topic of great interest to our editorial board, our non-profit #educationalprograms and our supporters.

Hi all,

I just moved over to this server, so I figured I should make an #introduction!

I'm starting as an assistant professor of CS at UW-Madison in Fall '23 after I finish my post-doc at UMD.

I (mostly) work at the intersection of #Security and #ProgrammingLanguages, but I like to dip my toes into #DistributedSystems and #AppliedCryptography now and again.

I've historically mostly lurked (both here and on the bird site pre-exodus), but I want to be more active.
