55-летний Бэк, основатель Blockstream и изобретатель Hashcash (основа майнинга биткоина), отрицает причастность к созданию криптовалюты.

Расследование The New York Times вёл Джон Каррейру — двукратный лауреат Пулитцеровской премии, известный разоблачением Theranos. Анализируя переписку Сатоси, архивы «Шифропанков» и работы Бэка, Каррейру пришёл к выводу: из 620 кандидатов именно Бэк разделяет с Сатоси максимум орфографических ошибок, редких словосочетаний и стилистических особенностей, включая двойной пробел между предложениями и термин *burning the money*.

Но есть хронологическое противоречие: Бэк активно работал над электронными деньгами с 1990-х и описал почти все ключевые элементы биткоина к 1999 году. Однако после публикации белой книги Сатоси в 2008 году он проявил интерес только в апреле 2011 года, когда Сатоси исчез.
