Good fun to be had here.

Highly recommended.

This seems apt to watch given today’s developments in the Middle East, as it seems the world is being thrust into another stupid, pointless, unnecessary, probably illegal armed conflict.

In the following posts, there will be a quote from the very end of this Oscar® winning documentary which will seem, sadly, an evergreen statement.

Very highly recommended.

How was I not aware of a Sidney Lumet picture starring Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, with Albert Finney, Marisa Tomei, and Michael Shannon until recently?

An incredible cast, with a fantastic script, inspired direction, fantastic cinematography and editing.

Such a slow motion train wreck of events. You can’t take your eye off of it.

An interesting conceit: we are watching a documentary put together a year after the fictional assassination of PotUS 43 in 2007. We hear from Secret Service, the FBI, and local Police, as well as relatives of those accused.

Mistakes are made. Innocent are victimized. Justice is avoided.

It’s all too real, sadly.

When it was released, people objected to it and protested its content. They were idiots.

Highly recommended.

★★★☆☆ (but a very strong 3)

A staggering work of incredible scope. I have long been of the opinion that Cillian Murphy just needed the right vehicle to present his considerable skills to the public. He will win an Oscar® for this. Robert Downey Jr might as well, and his scenes all look like they were shot by Life magazine in the setting’s era.

Very highly recommended.

This is probably the fourth time I’ve seen this. I’ve been meaning to see it again for a while, but did now by watching a series of lectures about philosophical themes in movies, principally SF ones.

Here, it’s ‘free will.’ Do we have actual decision making abilities or is the future predestined? SPOILER: we do; it’s not; be responsible for the effects of your choices and actions, you miserable sop.

This is a work of fiction, and merely inspired by actual people and events.

However…

If even ⅓ of what is in this film is real, it’s a miracle that RiM ever had all of the mobile ’phone / smartphone market.

The stunning thing is how insane and arrogant Jim Balsillie is here. The character is 5% reality, and the rest is fiction. The performance is just inspiringly real.

The film is shaky-cam / docu-style, but is incredibly entertaining, even fun!

As far as I’m aware, I hadn’t seen this until now.

The characters are incredibly realistic; so much so that I’m surprised they were allowed to be so… well… ugly. Telly Savalas’ role is especially nasty; and he plays it very carefully to the hilt and no further.

The dénouement is, frankly, quite inhumane, even if it is NAZIs that are being made to suffer.

Due to great pacing, it doesn’t feel like 2½ hours.

So…

I am playing catch-up with the various threads which lead to the film last evening. Due to Columbia and #Marvel co-owning the IP involved, I had to rent this.

Anywho: there are some incredibly well written things that bring three version of Spider-Man together while still staying true to the character’s moral fibre. This is no small thing.

There are also really great performances here from everyone.

Highly recommended.

First, forget anything you might think about Aubrey Plaza. This is •not• “Parks & Rec.” Like, not at all.

This is an incredible performance from Ms Plaza; indeed, an incredible performance had it been any actor.

It is very much ‘up to the minute,’ and yet also very much a #neonoir, harkening back to films of the ’60s and ’70s with its gritty realism and ‘hard scrabble’ approach to the economic realities of everyday life.

Recommended.
