Eight years ago today, on 23 April 2018, I officially became an Australian citizen. 🇦🇺🇵🇹

That day was incredibly profound for me, but the real transformation started in the months leading up to the ceremony. I spent that time quietly adapting, processing what it truly meant to take this step. It felt like the very internal fabric of who I am was fundamentally changing. At times, it felt a bit heavy, like I was letting go of a tiny piece of my Portuguese side to make room for this new reality.

Looking back, I realise I wasn't losing anything at all. I was simply reweaving that fabric so my heart could be divided equally in two—half Portugal, half Australia.

Our national anthem says, "For those who've come across the seas, we've boundless plains to share." That line resonated deeply with me then, and it still does today. It perfectly captures what makes Australia so brilliant: embracing diversity, welcoming different nationalities, and recognising that together, we are one and free.

I am incredibly proud to celebrate this milestone today, and so grateful to have the privilege of calling both of these beautiful countries home.
