If you're linking to a file from a web page, add extra info to the link text such as file format and size so the user knows what to expect and whether to open it.

Example: 'New website questionnaire (.docx 87kb)' - this tells the users what it is (descriptive link text), what format (the format may not be compatible for them) and size (they could be on metered bandwidth).
