Looking downstream and upstream on the River Medlock as it flows through its canalised channel of terracotta Accrington Bricks in between Philips Park and Philips Park Cemetery in East Manchester. Apparently, the same type of bricks were used in the foundation of the Empire State Building. The river was placed in this channel after a great flood in 1872, when coffins disgorged their contents and bodies spilled onto the streets and gardens of East Manchester.
