hi all,

our PO Box renewal date is coming up soon. We maintain a PO Box for prisoners to write to us, sending us analysis, poetry, and other updates from behind the walls. Some of the work that has been sent to our PO Box includes "The Struggle for Higher Education" by Jermond Perry (https://michiganabolition.org/2025/08/25/the-struggle-for-higher-education/ ) and “The Desecration of a Nation: A Review of Vine Deloria Jr.’s God Is Red” by Mangáakà Ade Ògúnkeye Uche Owogbala (https://michiganabolition.org/2024/08/26/the-desecration-of-a-nation-a-review-of-vine-deloria-jr-s-god-is-red-by-mangaaka-ade-ogunkeye-uche-owogbala/ ).

A PO Box is a necessary expense for all prisoner support groups, but USPS has been raising its rates over and over and over again. This time, we need $125 to keep the PO Box functioning. Can you help us raise $125 by March 15?

20/125! let's keep it up!

Update: “Juan, his 16-month-old sister, his mom, and his dad have been deported. According to their atty, ICE deported the family with only the money that they had in their commissary—…$190.” DHS deported an unresponsive 2 mth old & his family. This is depraved, criminal behavior. #AbolitionNow

We are thrilled to publish this interview with JR in the latest issue of The Opening Statement, our free quarterly newsletter for prisoners.

JR is a library worker and abolitionist who has been a member of the No Detention Centers in Michigan (NDCM) coalition since 2019. Under the second Trump administration, we have seen the reopening of the private North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, MI as an ICE detention center.

On July 4, the coalition held a demonstration outside the prison, and 200 people came out to demand its closing and stand in solidarity with the immigrants held captive inside.

In the interview, which has been lightly edited, JR discusses the history of and conditions at North Lake, the importance of NDCM’s abolitionist framework, and why the migrant detention/deportation regime can be understood as an expression of fascism. We conducted this interview by email in July 2025.

Why are some ideas hidden, suppressed by the state? How do we harness these ideas for both personal transformation & collective liberation? Discuss these questions and more in this monthly space. No prior reading is required for this introductory session. Our justice system is anything but.
It's a fucking farce.
It is an instrument of white supremacy.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
And don't wait until it's you or someone you care about to figure this shit out.

(2/2) Indeed, if we were to condemn every person who ever talked to themselves while walking somewhere they weren't supposed to with a weapon - that'd be one way to abolish all cops!

Police are the modern day legacy of the slave patrol, and in Minneapolis they've been protecting wealth and whiteness since 1867. As always, we honor and remember all who have fallen to police violence - whether or not they are an "ideal victim." #AbolitionNow -jh
