I think Clarissa Mao (Melba) is also more interesting in the book. In the book she's the boss of the maintenance crew, but is way out of her depth. Her subordinates figure it out and lend her a hand, and she forms a rapport with them.

When Ren finds the bomb she planted, she is legitimately torn about having to kill him, and his death haunts her long afterwards.

In the show she comes across as a sociopath who kills her boss on the first day of work.

Ashford on the show is way more likable than he is in the book.

Unfortunately, as much as I love Carmina, the security officer Bull in the book, which is one of the characters she replaces, is more interesting. He was an earther who repatriated to the belt, so much of his story was about him proving himself to the belter crew of The Behemoth. Carmina has none of that, she's belt through and through.

I'm pretty much halfway through #AbaddonsGate, book 3 of #TheExpanse, reading a lot since I'm on a trip :P

I've been having a whale of a time with James S.A. Corey's 'Abaddon's Gate', and learning a lot about the craft of novelling while I'm at it.

Oliver Arditi's review of Abaddon's Gate (The Expanse, #3)

4/5: I started reading The Expanse as a kind of 'guilty pleasure'. As I had enjoyed the TV series, I thought they'd probably be entertaining, undemanding, SF adventures, with a mid-tech, Solar System setting that I've always been drawn to. This is roughly the case, but although they may not have the thematic complexity, or literary depth of the books I usually enjoy the most, all three of the examples I've read so far have been lessons in novel-making for me. Abaddon's gate is populated with interesting, non-obvious characters, all of whose stories come together in pretty unpredictable ways over...

I finished _Abaddon’s Gate_. I thought the authors did a pretty good job with the religious figure, Anna. Sometimes a character like that can feel trite, or forced into a certain perspective, but she was complex and nuanced and came across as genuine.
