@Joysauce is usually focused on celebrating joy in the AANHPI community. "But how do we do that when things seem so bleak?" wrote editor Samantha Pak in her introduction to this Flipboard Storyboard, which our @CultureDesk featured. It centers on stories of activism — stories that Pak says should remind us not to lose hope.

Fight back this AANHPI month with JoySauce

One of the things JoySauce is focused on is celebrating the joy in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community. But how do we do that when things seem so bleak? We stand up against oppression, so we can find that joy once again—just as AANHPIs have been doing for generations. From organizing and creating new laws, to breaking down barriers and using art to spread awareness, these AANHPIs are reminding us to not lose hope, and to keep fighting the good fight.

The Thompsons, a Black couple, rented to the Dongs, a Chinese American family, 85 years ago when nobody else would. Now, the Dongs are donating $5 million to Black college students because they say the Thompsons helped them get a toehold in U.S. society.

In 1939, the Dongs, a Chinese American family, could not find a house to rent in Coronado, Calif., because of racially restrictive housing laws. Emma and Gus Thompson, a Black couple, allowed the family to rent and later buy their home. Now, the Dongs have sold that house, and are donating $5 million to Black college students. They are also working to have San Diego State University's Black Resource Center named after Emma and Gus, who was born into slavery in Kentucky. Here's more from NBC News.

We learned this week that Tooru Mochida — oldest of the 7 children in the iconic Dorothea Lange photo — passed in November. This was a shock and a heart breaker as Tooru had seemed to be in excellent health, and was such a terrific storyteller, with excellent memories of growing up before the war and his time in Tanforan.

When I took this picture in 2017, 5 of the family were still living; now it's just two. We're losing the Greatest Generation. 😞
