Wrote a brief note to my federal MP, asking her not to let #AABill and/or other “national security”, “child pornography” legislations get in the way of #iCloud Advanced Data Protection in #Australia next year. (She wasn't in parliament back in 2018.)

We are learning lessons from the oh‐so‐recent Optus and Medibank #DataBreach, right?

Labor are so afraid of getting wedged that they've forgotten about the concept of a backbone.

This isn't a particularly new thing, either. Just look at their response to the #AABill

@kevinbonham I definitely want to play poker against the Labor party.

Fold, fold, fold, fold.

Very sad...

The disastrous #AABill is here. It puts encryption and Australians' #privacy at risk, and lets police compel providers of free WiFi to hand over information on users. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/may/28/spies-with-that-police-can-snoop-on-mcdonalds-and-westfield-wifi-customers
ProtonVPN is a free #VPN that can prevent others from spying on your online activities.
Spies with that? Police can snoop on McDonald's and Westfield wifi customers

Exclusive: Documents reveal rushed encryption legislation allows police to compel wifi providers to turn over information about users

Who could possibly have anticipated this shocking development occurring as a result of poorly thought out legislation rushed through without due consideration?

'Hosted email provider FastMail says it has lost customers and faces “regular” requests to shift its operations outside Australia following the passage of anti-encryption laws.'

FastMail loses customers, faces calls to move over anti-encryption laws

Australia no longer 'respects right to privacy'.

I just submitted a submission on the #AAbill (https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Joint/Intelligence_and_Security/ReviewofTOLAAct). Submissions due at 5pm. Mine was only 300 words, and didn't cite a bunch of facts and figures, but it's *something*.
Maybe #auspol will ignore it, but at least I've tried.

Have you? Give it a shot. Please.

Review of the Telecommunications and Other Legislation Amendment (Assistance and Access) Act 2018 – Parliament of Australia

Review of the Telecommunications and Other Legislation Amendment (Assistance and Access) Act 2018

"Getting companies to denounce the bill is asking them to tell the world not to trust Australian IT businesses, which they'll be reluctant to do." #aabill
"The Jobs and Growth could backfire for those who think it'd be a good thing if the 'tech elite' got cut down a few notches, given their perception as tall poppies etc. Taking the 'this will negatively effect your kids' jobs'' could elicit a more useful emotive response." #aabill
"The best narrative we have so far is that the #aabill negatively affects Jobs and Growth."
"What we have is a narrative problem. If we can't tell a story better than "terrorists and paedophiles," we're not going to have success bringing people to our point of view." #aabill

Submissions re-opened for the #aabill. Details here.
