I was fascinated to read "The Origins of Python" by Professor Lambert Merteens that dove into the programming languages like ABC, SETL, and TELCOMP that set the stage for what Guido van Rossum would later do with Python.

Tip for new Mastodon users - if you find your timelines having many posts in languages you can't understand, there's a simple way to change that. In the web view (vs mobile app), go into Preferences -> Other and scroll down to "Filter languages". Check the ones you know and save changes. Now you will only see posts that indicate they are in those languages.

I wrote a piece today about why I'm excited to see organizations such as Mozilla and ACM launching Mastodon / Fediverse servers - and also some of the challenges they will face.

If Mastodon is to grow to include many more people coming from birdsite and from other services, we'll continue to need MORE instances/servers.

Just as birdsite killed off their Revue newsletter service, Automattic is out there reminding people that WordPress.com can be a great platform for email newsletters. They've also launched a new theme and some better onboarding screens.
