Cooper, Frederick. "Decolonizations, Colonizations, and More Decolonizations: The End of Empire in Time and Space." Journal of World History 33, no. 3 (2022): 491-526. muse.jhu.edu/article/864573.

Abstract:
In the 1950s and 1960s, colonial empires turned into what seemed to be a world of nation-states. But the first wave of decolonization came in the Americas between the 1780s and the 1820s. This article explores the relationship between these two waves and the wave of colonizations that occurred in between. Rather than assimilating the two episodes of decolonization to a single narrative, I argue that both entailed profound struggles in which national sovereignty was only one possible outcome and that in between empires were reinvigorated, transformed, and reinvented. The second wave of decolonization entailed what the first did not: undermining the very idea of empire. Both waves left unanswered a question that had concerned activists in their times: could political liberation be turned into economic and social justice? This article points to the uses and limits of the concept of decolonization in understanding struggles for global equality.

Zhu, Jing. “Visual Evidence? Rethinking Anthropological Photography in Republican China (1912–1949).” History and Anthropology 0, no. 0 (September 5, 2022): 1–31. https://doi.org/10.1080/02757206.2022.2119228.

Abstract: Focusing on ethnographic photography representing ethnic minorities on China’s southwest frontier during the Republican era (1912–1949), this paper reconsiders the role of photography as a source of evidence. The cross-cultural case in China extends studies of anthropology and photography beyond a European context and complicates our understanding of ‘photographic evidence’ by probing how such evidence was collected, produced, circulated and perceived in Han Chinese society. While photography played a significant role as an evidential force for anthropological and ethnographic endeavors, photography as ‘evidence’ was negotiated within the Chinese social, political, and cultural context of ethnicity. In spite of anthropological photography’s western origins, it is impossible to fully understand work representing the non-Han subject in Republican China without analyzing its relationship with the visual tradition of the Miao album, a late imperial Chinese genre of ethnographic illustration. Through a critical reading of ‘photographic evidence’ pertaining to non-Han women’s work, marriage and dance, this paper reveals the paradox of anthropological photography as visual evidence and highlights the social constitution of such work.

History in politics: a “battle” of identity historical narratives between Chinese and Anglophone academia

ABSTRACT:
This article discusses an important political conflict of historical knowledge between Chinese and Anglophone academia. By exploring divergent perspectives either on long-term and coherent narratives of China or short-term and differentiated narratives of China through the founding issues of Historical Review (Lishi pinglun) established by the Chinese Academy of History in 2020, this article illustrates a ‘battle’ of narratives derived from different regimes of historical knowledge, either officially institutionalized in contemporary China or unofficially constituted in Anglophone academia. Specifically, by critically evaluating the discursive constructions of identity-driven historical narratives of both sides, this article gives a serious consideration to the Historical Review’s mission against the deconstructionist historical narratives. In so doing, I argue that even if it is true that the Historical Review contributors are nationalists and thus help radicalize Chinese nationalism, the liberalist deconstructionist historians of China in English academia are not free from the same types of ‘political contaminations’ by lighting the excessive fires of China bashing.
