While I was sad to have not seen Lauren Mayberry perform live on January 29th, 2025 I ended up being happy with a consolation prize of watching 唐探1900「Tángtàn 1900」aka Detective Chinatown 1900.
It's currently playing theatrically and is set in San Francisco at the start of the 20th century. It is comedic and has some action sequences, but has a lot anti-sino sentiments and racism waged against Chinese Americans (and Indigenous tribes and I would say there's a not so healthy dose of racist stereotypes thrown at Irish Americans too) as was well, prevalent at the time.
Honestly, it still seems as if there's hella racism in Murica even in 2025, but maybe it's a bit different now than that movie attempts to depict it as being then? John Cusack (who also starred in the 2024 Chinese period drama Decoded) plays a prominent role as a racist California Congressman.
Earlier in the day I watched 封神第二部:戰火西岐 aka Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force. Which, if you saw Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, it's a continuation of that. Spoilers: there's also going to be a 3rd installment in the franchise.
Essentially based on 封神演義「fēngshén yǎnyì」from the 16th century, and intentionally released to coincide with Chinese Lunar New Year, it was pretty fun to see on an IMAX (technically "lIeMAX" [dual laser projectors 8K, not 70mm 15 perforation horizontal film]) and the director 乌尔善「Wuershan」is clearly going for an epic on par (or IMHO, maybe surpassing) something like the LotR trilogy.
The next day I watched Hit N Fun (Cantonese with English subtitles) which is sort of a weird Muay Thai "revenge for stealing my boyfriend" movie. It was OK, but definitely I think the other two movies were better for bringing in the year of the Wood Snake and if you had to choose two out of the three? Don't bother with Hit N Fun.
