Docker on MacOS is still slow?

Info 06/01/2025 Update: Many readers requested the inclusion of OrbStack in the benchmarks. This update introduces OrbStack’s performance data, along with updated insights and comparisons. TLDR Link to heading Two years after my first analysis of Docker performance on MacOS, things have improved significantly. VirtioFS is now much faster (bind mounts are only 3x slower instead of 5-6x), and we have new solutions in the ecosystem. Lima (open-source) performs well and sometimes better than Docker Desktop, while Docker’s new file synchronization feature offers impressive speed improvements (59% faster) but requires a paid subscription. Additionally, OrbStack has emerged as a strong contender, offering excellent performance with bind mounts and native operations. For the most stable performance, the hybrid approach (combining bind mounts with volumes) remains the best practice. Choose your setup based on your needs:

I was sharing a bunch of links on #Matrix on my phone using the #Element app, and then realised later in my phone's app switcher that it has many open instances of the Element app, probably from each time I launched it from the share sheet - how the fuck even.

I feel like I've to create a dedicated thread of
#Android's jankiness on here at this point - cos long time Android users clearly have no idea how janky #Google's toy operating system is, being so accustomed to it all.

It's so dumb to think that Blue Sky asks you to upload a GIF as video in order to post an actual working animated GIF.....otherwise you have to use it's own GIF function

Honestly, we are currently out of ideas on how to restore access to Codeberg.org.

We are fighting with extreme traffic and high load for several hours now, we have done the typical procedure to identify and block misbehaving AI crawlers.

However, we are currently having a hard time figuring out details about the ongoing high traffic situation.

It is essential to stop using Chrome.

Under the pretense of saving users from third-party spyware, Google is creating an ecosystem in which Chrome itself is the spyware.

Given Google's overwhelming presence in the browser market, this is unconscionable.

We should all despise the ad-tech business, and have no sympathy for the companies getting whacked by Google's actions. But we should not permit one monopolist to replace them all.

Year In Review: Google’s Corporate Paternalism in The Browser

It’s a big year for the oozing creep of corporate paternalism and ad-tracking technology online. Google and its subsidiary companies have tightened their grips on the throat of internet innovation, all while employing the now familiar tactic of marketing these things as beneficial for users.
