So, the ECB has opened this survey to get an idea if people would like to see birds on the next set of Euro bank notes.

Okay. My phrasing might be a bit leading as there are other topics they present as options to thumb down before they ask about the birds (like European virtues and culture expressed as hands). But really, in the end... they just want your OK to put birds on bank notes.
If you have some time for this: lend them a hand!

You will not get Twitter back this way, let it die. Just call it nothing and don’t talk about it. If you must, call it Musk’s chat app and refer to the texts as IMs.

Fascinating read about the OceanGate submersible that eventually imploded to the surprise of nobody who knew anything about it: https://www.newyorker.com/news/a-reporter-at-large/the-titan-submersible-was-an-accident-waiting-to-happen

We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture capable of creating secure devices
This place is not a place of cryptographic security
No keys are secure here
The method of compromise here was honestly absolutely batshit
This disclosure is a warning about holy fuck did you see what they did
The danger is in a particular location by the power LED
… it increases towards the center of the CPU
… the center of the danger is in the cryptographic libraries

Justizminister Buschmann will Urheberrechtsverletzungen zu "digitaler Gewalt" machen.

Argh! I started using Apple notes and today I lost a note due to fat fingering my phone: turns out that deleting the note content completely and closing the note permanently deletes the note and content. Complaining in Apple community failed for a similar reason; tapping the wrong link looses all content. I think I am cured of thinking of Apple software as well designed…
@chandlerc, re https://chandlerc.blog/posts/little_things_1_access/. What I like about Go‘s way of defining public functions is that it’s easy to understand the access level at the call site. I never new I wanted that until I started reading code in another language after reading a lot of Go code. The other thing I like is that changing the access level highlights all usages during code review.
The little things #1: Access control

This post is part of a series looking at little details of programming language design, mostly in the context of Carbon. Check out the series intro post for context and other entries. Let’s talk about public vs. private! Folks who know C++ may be familiar with these concepts, but here is a quick example: class MyType { public: void MyPublicFunction(); private: void InternalDetail(); }; One of the things that has always been frustrating to me are exactly how public and private work here.

I've been viscerally opposed to regulating technology except the the most rare of circumstances.

That was before our new masters of the universe turned us into the subjects of black-box science experiments at accelerating speeds -- and fired the people who think about the ethics of it all.

This is unacceptable, and if the public doesn't wake up, a few mega-wealthy and powerful people could ruin everything for everyone but (temporarily) themselves.
