Pulled the harmonic balancer, timing cover, and oil pan tonight, after pulling the engine mounts and fan pulley earlier today. Several parts soaking in hot water and dish soap to soften up decades of caked on gunk. Almost considered making my own hot tank using my 40 qt home brewing kettle and propane burner with this water soap mixture, but didn't want to have to clean it up. Slow and steady progress. #wrenching #diy #ClassicCars
Well this is what it looks like when you're using a valve spring compressor to remove valves from your cylinder head. In case you were wondering. #wrenching #diy #ClassicCars
My old truck's engine compartment looks pretty weird without an engine in place. Looking forward to getting this all degreased, painted, and wiring cleaned up, but that's probably going to be a while. Something to work on while the block is at the machinist, once I get to that stage. #wrenching #DIY #ClassicCars
The same thing it came out of! A1965 GMC 1000 truck which I'm slowly restoring. Not planning a show truck, just a solid daily driver. It's amazing how vehicles last out here in California, nothing like the rusty rot you get in Michigan. #wrenching #ClassicCars #DIY
This is what I'm up against next. Need to track down a valve spring compressor and build a rack (read: drill some holes in wood) to keep all the valves in the right order. Also need to do some garage organization so I have clean places to put things as I disassemble. Sorta learning as I go. I've found I really enjoy restoring things. Some day I'll post pics of refurbishing a rusty bench vise.
Got the bellhousing mostly cleaned up last night. Still going to strip and paint it eventually. It was covered in about a quarter inch of grime in some places. I'm holding off on any major work on secondary equipment until I can confirm the engine block is sound and can be machined/bored as part of the rebuild. If the block is toast, my whole plan goes out the window. Trying and failing to find the energy to make progress tonight. #wrenching #diy #ClassicCars
Believe it or not, this is a big improvement, cleanliness wise. Trying to scrape the major gunk off before taking anything apart. #Wrenching #ClassicCars #DIY
It took about 4x longer than I expected, but I finally wrestled the heart out of the beast. The crane barely lifted high enough, and we had 2 false starts before finally getting it pulled. Now that I've been through it, I reckon next time I could have it out in 20 minutes. #Wrenching #DIY #ClassicCars
