In "Machine Readable Me" @zararah Rahman examines the databases in which we leave traces - consciously or unconsciously. Using current and historical examples, she shows how this data is used to:

➡️ categorise and evaluate individuals and groups
➡️ grant or deny state or private services
➡️ realise surveillance measures

We want to discuss this – and the possibilities for containing the power of data that Rahman presents in her book – with you.

⚠️ Confirmed: Live network data show a collapse in connectivity in the #Gaza Strip with high impact to Paltel, amid reports of heavy bombardment; the company is the last remaining major operator to supply service as connectivity declines amid ongoing fighting with Israel 📉
It’s publication day for my little book, Machine Readable Me! Thrilled to see this out in the world 💕 It’s the culmination of 10+ years of research on how data about who we are impacts our lives. Available now online in all the usual places or via your local bookshop! #pubday
If you/your community are new to tech/data justice issues, and working on migration justice, racial justice or social justice + would like a free copy, please DM me! Or, if I can come and talk about the issues in the book + how they intersect with your focus, do get in touch 🙏🏽
I chose this format and style of book (and publishing with 404ink) for a very specific reason: I don’t want to keep preaching to the choir. The book is short, pocket-sized, and hopefully inexpensive enough and inviting enough that newcomers to the topic will pick it up 🤞🏽
In it, I draw upon my research from over the past decade – from lived experiences of government-run digital ID, to UN use of biometrics with refugees, to predictive machine learning and children's rights, and much more.
My book, Machine Readable Me: The Hidden Ways Tech Shapes Our Identities, is out in 3 weeks! It's an accessible intro to how data about who we are is used by governments and others to shape the paths available to us in life. 1/ https://www.404ink.com/store/inklings-machine-readable-me
Inklings #19: Machine Readable Me - Zara Rahman — 404 Ink

Machine Readable Me considers how and why data that is gathered about us is increasingly limiting what we can and can’t do in our lives and, crucially, what the alternatives are.
