A cockroach and jewel wasp are locked in battle. The wasp latches onto the cockroach and inserts her stinger into the cockroach's brain, where her venom blocks its fight-or-flight response. Now, the cockroach is essentially a zombie, and its carcass will be used to grow the wasp’s offspring. Miles Zhang explores the gruesome evolutionary strategy known as parasitoidism.
My TedEd lesson is now officially out, sort of a sneak peek into the macabre and fascinating world of parasitoid wasps and how they attack different preys. It was an absolute joy working on the script and seeing it animated with the production team!
Cool paper on specialist vs generalist oak species in North America, would be interesting to see if the galls on these oaks also show the same pattern.
