Today, my railway journey from πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡ Bangkok back to πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Alsace finally begins.

Marking the start of my trip, I visited the Hua Lamphong railway station. The beautiful building with a huge departure hall, flowers and fountains is sadly only served by  commuter trains and the  subway in present times since the mainline operations were completely moved to the new Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in 2016.

Nevertheless, the railway station nowadays hosting a museum with beautiful old Thai trains serves as an excellent location to start my trip : I will spend the next two weeks all on trains : Sleeper trains, high-speed trains and adorable regional trains will hopefully safely guide me for 17.000 km on rails spanning from Thailand via China, Siberia and the Ural to Europe.

@decryption And here's me thinking i'm a "ultra-leet home labber" now because i discovered Proxmox over the Xmas break and have two PVE nodes and local PBS and remote PBS at my brothers place in Adelaide. Meanwhile, Anthony is casually living in the year 3047. LOVING IT !!!
@stilgherrian I've never said THANK YOU for alerting me to the presence and existence of Balming Tiger... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACCEDuwjVp8

@TWiT I have run a PLex Media Server on a headless 2018 Intel Mac Mini for the last two years. works great. He's being retired, literally today as we speak, as i migrate the PMS duties to an LXC in Proxmox on a NUC N150 that draws 6W of power idle and 10W under load, compared to the 2018 MM that idles at 40-45W and 90C CPU. The N150 NUC also running my Home Assistant, the 'arr-suite, changedetection.io, audiobookshelf and some Wireguard VPN and Tor gateway LXC's. Rest easy my faithfull MM2018.

ADHD packing list:

β€’ 7 books you won’t read
β€’ ipad full of movies/shows you won’t watch
β€’ random crap that sounded important 5 minutes before you left
β€’ extra toothbrush?

Stuff forgotten:

β€’ toothpaste
β€’ an entire category of clothing
β€’ one REALLY important cable

NARRATOR: He needed another USB cable tester thingy...

Thanks to @sizzle for highlighting this in today's edition.

Technology: The (nearly) perfect USB cable tester does exist

Your USB cables may lie to your PC. Let me show you how to catch those.

@decryption Proxmox was my Xmas break project and I've been playing around mostly with LXC's. Super lightweight, near instant to START-STOP. I'm running all mine as Unprivileged containers - except Plex which needs to be Privileged. Some good scriptable stuff here https://github.com/community-scripts/ProxmoxVE Moved my 'arr suite across to LXC's. about to checkout Turnkey https://www.turnkeylinux.org/ to maybe spin up a Wireguard VPN Gateway container. I created one in LXC by hand but this might be better. will see.

@jeffjarvis I have Workspace Business Starter with me as the only user, with my private domain, and I defintely have Gemini in Chrome as my AI. It's actually handy to quickly fire it a question or two when i'm in the middle of a deep deep chat session with one of my other AI's - Perplexity, or DeepSeek or ChatGPT... like a pallet cleanse and sidebar. . I just asked it "are you Bard?" and it said "I am Gemini. Bard was retired by Google in 2024 and replaced with Gemini branded AI search tools"
