Google is now marking EVERY SINGLE APK at our repository as "Malware site issue". Congrats, "Safe" browsing.

Of course there is not a single malware there, everything is scanned multiple times. And I bet they excluded *.google.com from their scan or the entire PlayStore would be red by now, too…

This is my last day at Android Authority, and it also marks the end of my time posting Android news!

I've spent the past 10 years writing about Android, and I've enjoyed every moment of it. What began as a hobby in college — tinkering with custom ROMs and modding my phone — turned into a long career, one totally disconnected from my degree in Biomedical Engineering.

Last night Organic Maps was removed from the Play Store without any warnings or additional details due to "not meeting the requirements for the Family Program". Compared to Google Maps and other maps apps rated for 3+ age, there are no ads or in-app purchases, and no user information is collected in Organic Maps. We have asked for an appeal.

As a temporary workaround you can install the upcoming Google Play update from this link: https://cdn.organicmaps.app/apk/OrganicMaps-24081605-GooglePlay.apk

This APK should work with Android Auto.

24GB of RAM in a smartphone might have sounded absurd last year, but it makes sense given the current context.

I'm really curious to see how well phones like the OnePlus 12 will be able to handle on-device generative AI tasks.

I know the OnePlus 12 has Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but for reference, MediaTek said that pairing its Dimensity 9300 with 24GB of RAM enables running a 33B parameter LLM at rate of 3-4 tokens/s.

Google says the new optimizations in ART 14, which are available on all devices running Android 12+ via a Google Play System Update to the ART Mainline module, have resulted in an average of 50-100MB in storage savings thanks to a 9.3% reduction in optimized code size, without impacting performance.

Google says these optimizations save 47-95 petabytes globally because "an average phone can have 500MB-1GB in optimized code" and these optimizations reach over 1 billion devices.

Android 14 adds support for Ultra HDR, a new type of JPEG file (JPEG_R) that can include a gainmap in its metadata so that the HDR version of an image can be rendered on HDR displays and the SDR version on SDR displays.

Separately, Android 14 also adds APIs that lets 3P apps like Chrome support HDR images. Chrome now not only supports these kind of relative HDR containers (like Google's Ultra HDR or Apple's EDR) but also absolute HDR containers (like 10-bit AVIF).

The result is stunning!
