Following on from my post, "A Tiling Desktop Environment", this weekend I built a new website to document my thinking and research as I consider the comments received, try out suggestions, and look into the state of open source desktop environments. It's called Desktop Institute. You can find it at https://desktop.institute/

In my GTK travels last night I also discovered the broadway GTK backend. It renders GTK apps via a server in the browser. Here it is showing a quite responsive and faithful rendition of gedit. For more info check out the main developers blog: https://blogs.gnome.org/alexl/

Apple to stop shipping Ruby, Python, and Perl in future releases. “Future versions of macOS won’t include scripting language runtimes by default”. Native binaries FTW 😉 https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos_release_notes/macos_10_15_beta_release_notes

A Tiling Desktop Environment

I've been thinking about graphical shells recently. One of the great things about open source desktops is there is a plethora of choice when it comes to graphical shells. However they seem to fall into two camps: Full featured desktop environments that stick to the conventional stacking window metaphor. Narrowly featured window manager based environments that include tools like tiling window managers often optimised for efficient keyboard use.
