@johnettesnuggs @bluedotmo @QasimRashid the problem with history is how to pinpoint the starting point for some historical event. I'd say it was Wallace and Goldwater that pulled the extremists out of the democrat party and into the republican party (overtaking the moderate majority), and brought with them the lesson that extremism is chic, leading to Nixon then Reagan
@QasimRashid A few people in the thread is trying to pinpoint a person or event to describe how we got here and I think it's a much larger web of actors. https://ir.lawnet.fordham.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2232&context=ulj highlights the choice the GOP had in 2002 and the path they chose that lead us to today.
@miki_lou @QasimRashid I don't think that article is exactly fair to Lincoln; to say Lincoln was always about white supremacy because he spared confederates from hanging ignores the fact that he was envisioning his vision for reconstruction and believed handing punishments to confederates would not end the conflict. We'll never know because Johnson came in and basically signaled to the south they didn't have to change.
@ianbobmorris @Pwnallthethings I think we have to take their stated motivation with a grain of salt. They might have been paid in cash by a friend of a friend who wanted to commit terrorism or test it out and they'll just take the punishment or be the fall guys rather than snitch and risk their lives.
