@daringfireball YC has been funding these kinds of 'speculative' startups since I started reading DF in 2006. They get funding based on an idea, determine there isn't a $1B market cap of demand for that idea, and pivot, pivot, pivot. The difference is that YC has started funding based on 'founder vibes' rather than the quality of the initial idea. But the maturity of the initial idea reflects the maturity of the founder, so the outcome is kind of obvious in hindsight.
@daringfireball Your assessment of Essayist is spot on. It doesn't have product fit yet and as a former academic it shows. Would maybe work for first-year undergraduates but it's not a tool for professionals.
The industry desperately needs a replacement for papers.app; Papers 3 was the gold standard for academic writing IMO and a great native Mac app. Then it got brought out and turned into an enshittified SAAS web-app.
