2025 App Store Award Winners: Tiimo, Essayist, and Detail

I did not enjoy them as much as Apple did.

@daringfireball 😂 chuckled at the line about Arial. What is it with apps (looking at you YouTube) putting OS features behind a paywall.
@wezm @daringfireball I remember when it was against the App Store rules to pay wall OS features like that.
@bed @daringfireball yeah I made the same comment to my wife earlier

@daringfireball I’m so intrigued by the HBO Max app. It’s not available in my region, their content is shown on other platforms. Is this app special in some way that the other major streaming devices, Netflix, Disney+ etc. aren’t?

The blurb reads like an ad for HBO rather than mention anything about why the app is a cut above.

@daringfireball Your assessment of Essayist is spot on. It doesn't have product fit yet and as a former academic it shows. Would maybe work for first-year undergraduates but it's not a tool for professionals.

The industry desperately needs a replacement for papers.app; Papers 3 was the gold standard for academic writing IMO and a great native Mac app. Then it got brought out and turned into an enshittified SAAS web-app.

@wellsenkind @daringfireball What do people use these days? Even if it’s not perfect.

@daringfireball tiimo sounds like a knock-off/copy of llama life which is a great app. (I use it for running my morning routine when I'm at my most distractable!)

@daringfireball Re: Essayist's font choices. I believe the standard for academic papers is generally Times Roman or Times New Roman. The app is providing what its users will most likely need in that regard.
@daringfireball Did you know your quote from the App Store about Tiimo spells AI as Al with a lowercase L? Later quotes spell AI with an I though. I’m curious how this happened. OCR?
@daringfireball got news for you, if you think Arial is a "font crime" you might be neurodivergent
