Aaaand there it goes.FTX announced that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States. Sam Bankman-Fried resigned as CEO.SBF had spoken about trying to raise additional funds. In leaked Slack messages, he had allegedly written that "One could maybe say, if they wanted to be optimistic, that we have a lot theoretically in and/or potentially for the raise". No one was actually saying this.
"people who work with data are alternately called unicorns (because they are rare and have special skills), wizards (because they can do magic), ninjas (because they execute complicated, expert moves), rock stars (because they outperform others), and janitors (because they clean messy data)" 🥰
Something I have been thinking about recently is the cycle of trade offs we made when moving to the cloud.
The premise was that we now don’t have to worry about hardware but as a result we now have to track infrastructure in our code. Often, this results in a pattern of writing code to AWS or GCP spec rather than writing the logic of our program. This pattern is brilliantly described in this post as “tending to the vendor’s stuff.”
I'm not sure how to express my thoughts and concerns about moderation and racism and all hate speech and harassment...yes, even on Mastodon...but if it's happening, we need to be listening to those it's happening to.
Telling folks to 'report' and then 'block' is something I myself need to rethink. It's not enough.
I'm not sure what is next, but wow. These last weeks have been overwhelming, in so many ways.
It's a humbling experience.
Today was exhausting.
I asked someone to run a test on some data for me and the response was to assume I didn't know what I was talking about. This is not the first time this person has done this, they are constantly speaking down to me about science. I see how they treat colleagues that are men, and it's completely different from how they treat women.
So anyways, I'm looking for more #WomenInSTEM to connect with here! 🔭🧑🔬
