Looking forward, macOS and iOS redesign need to lean way from, and not into, deeper minimalism. We’ve had a good run since iOS 7, learned what worked & what didn’t. With Ai and declarative computing being the next tech revolution, our operating systems need a touch more humanity and tactility. Not Corinthian leather, but more than monotone UI with dark & light mode variants. Borrow materials from visionOS where prudent. Keep app icons square on iOS, round in AR & watch, mixed in macOS.

In my home lab/office I have a 2012 iMac running the last version of macOS Catalina. It is just as responsive and snappy as the day I bought it - no signs of feeling bogged down, bloated or unresponsive. Constantly reminds me of how we've lowered the bar and become accustomed to the opposite with today's software and operating systems. We just slapped more hardware specs to 'deal' with poorly architected software. I hope AI can someday serve as a performance linter & optimize speed / efficiency.
