‘It really is insane:’ Ex-defense minister on Slovakia’s pro-Russian turn¹

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, neighboring Slovakia, with its own experience of decades of Russian occupation in the 20th century, became one of the staunchest supporters of Ukraine.

Under the guidance of then-Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad, Bratislava became the first country to deliver fighter jets to Ukraine, handing over its MiG-29s to a badly depleted Ukrainian Air Force, along with a much-needed S-300 air defense system.

The Kyiv Independent spoke with Nad about Slovakia’s turn away from Ukraine, political processes inside the country, and the future of pro-Russian political advances across Europe.

Hmmm, 3 million a week is not going to fix the NHS and a few nice properties is not going to solve homelessness. I think there's enough money kicking around in the system today to fix the NHS, build enough homes for all the homeless and pay for the royals. The reason it hasn't happened is not because we have a monarchy but because of corruption and lack of political will.

@[email protected] Yes, we have a problem. Rampant corruption, the decay of democracy and competition for the truth. In my opinion, going after the monarchy at this point in time would fix nothing, be divisive and distract from the root cause issue of holding elected officials, public servants, business leaders and anyone in a position of power/responsibility responsible for thier actions. That includes the royals.

@[email protected] @alanferrier

and how exactly will replacing the monarchy slow (or better still reverse) and not accelerate the global democratic backsliding (an rise in fascism) we are witnessing?

@alanferrier @[email protected]

You've provided exactly zero arguments for how replacing the monarchy will usher in a better society. Give me something positive / sell it to me.

@Lassielmr @[email protected] @alanferrier

"Royals would not mean installing a president with executive powers" you don't know that. People voted for Brexit and didn't get the dream they were sold. How do you know for certain that the system replacing the royals would be less corrupt and more democratic than the system we have already?

@[email protected] @alanferrier I’ve been giving that concept some thought recently and realised that as expensive and “inequal” the monarchy is - when viewed as a protection racket against fascism, I think I’d prefer to keep an extravagant and arcane monarchy around rather than have a presidential system (for example) where a fascist, populist president is elected following a campaign powered by corrupt money.
