This is big. No #embargoes. No #APCs.

"The #EU is ready to agree that immediate #OpenAccess to papers reporting publicly funded research should become the norm, w/o authors having to pay fees & that the bloc should support #nonprofit scholarly publishing models.

In a move that could send shockwaves through commercial scholarly #publishing, the positions are due to be adopted by the Council of the EU member state governments later this month."

Lastly, our #article provides #policy #recommendations for the #EU .

This was a fun article to write and I hope that it will be #published soon. If it will become available, I will share it here with you!

#Russia is still a major player in the region. The country has a #peacekeeping mission with boots on the ground and #RussianPresident #Putin frequently engages in #diplomacy between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan .

#Iran is also engaged in the region, mainly through economic ties with Armenia .

Third, the #article discusses challenges and prospects for a possible #peaceagreement . Here it is important to realise that #peace might mean something very different for #Armenia and #Azerbaijan respectively. Both countries seem to be on a different page in this regard.

Additionally, while the #EU is engaging in #peacemediation, we should not forget the role of external powers.

The #MiddleCorridor is also important for #Ukraine. As mentioned before, this #traderoute enters #Europe via Ukraine. In the present situation, Ukraine also does not want #trade with #Russia . Ukraine also benefits from a viable Middle Corridor and hence #peace between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan .

For now however, the #EU has no choice and it has to ensure #peace between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan in order to ensure the viability of the #MiddleCorridor .

This is no easy task given the fact that #Russia still has a lot of #economic influence in Central Asia. Moreover, while critical #infrastructure is there, new projects are slow to start.

#Trade wise, #sanctions have made it impossible for the #EU to trade with China using the #NorthernCorridor of China’s #OneBeltOneRoad Initiative.

The best alternative is the #MiddleCorridor that runs from #China through #CentralAsia and the #SouthCaucasus region to #Ukraine and the EU.

It is imperative however that the Middle Corridor will be developed in a sustainable manner. Russia’s war in Ukraine will not last forever and it is clear that the EU will make use of the Northern Route again

#Energy wise, the #EU has made it clear since the renewed #Russianinvasion of 2022 that it wants to achieve complete #independence from #RussianEnergy . It introduced #REPowerEU and several visits to #Azerbaijan have been made in order to ensure #gas imports for the EU.

The EU needs to ensure #stability and #peace in the #SouthCaucasus region in order to safeguard long-term ventures and to mitigate risks to its #diversification goals.

Second, we explain the EU’s motivations for engaging in peace mediation between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan . This is the bulk of the article.

Mainly, the #EU wants to achieve stability in the #SouthCaucasus region. Why?

Because of #trade and #energy .
