Sometimes you get a card that's just so filthy that drastic measures are required 🙃

Always such a satisfying feeling to desolder a dead DS1287 RTC, solder a socket and install a new module. Another 486 board lives on 😁👍

The old module is from 1992, the new 30 years later in 2022!

Well, that was a first for me. I powered up an ISA sound card from eBay and one of the tantalum capacitors exploded in a pretty spectacular way with sparks and flames. The smell was awful. Took some time to air it out with a fan in the window 😢🔥

Another #3dfx Voodoo 3 card saved! Was right about it being a vBIOS issue but not the fault I expected! Small solder patch on the broken trace did the trick. Always such a great feeling to see it working for the first time 😁👍

Got a recap, the latest bios and newer EEPROM too

After the failed EEPROM replacement I started tracing all the relevant pins. Looking promising! This damaged trace near a via leads to the “OE” or “Output enable” pin. Continuity appears to be severed! 😮

My heart sank after I inspected the EEPROM pads of the V3 2000. Looked like I pulled/mangled three of them! Couldn’t understand how since the chip came off effortlessly.

False alarm! Just dull or discoloured. All pads are in great shape 😅

You can keep resisting all you want 3dfx flash utility. We have ways of making you cooperate 🔨🔥⚡️
Finally found a GeForce 256 DDR! Was cheap-ish but untested. Totally stable in 3D but has weird horizontal “smearing” for some reason. Anyone ever seen this or have any suggestions?

This thing has been in storage for over a year and a half… sad, I know 😢

Time for some maintenance and to get it up and running again!
