One of the things you realize dealing with TERFs, for example, is they hate young liberal cis women almost as much as trans people and for essentially the same reason: they hate their lives and they think everyone else should, too.

Transphobia is driven heavily by misogyny. It's also driven by gay panic bullshit.

But sometimes I think these people just miserably hate anyone who feels even a scrap of happiness compared to them.

@timberwraith @Greenseer followers ports pretty well. Your following list is another story. I recommend exporting that list before you start the process.

OK, well, to hell with this instance and Eugen. That was the final straw for me.

I'm likely going to move instances.

Fuck this.

I'm just going to put these three things together:

@veirling @bmacDonald94 Yeah, I hear you. I'm sorry you're feeling that. 😔

These betrayals are such a regular thing when I can bring myself to pay attention to the larger world, that I've become rather numb.

But really, being numb is just another face of dissociation that flows along with depression.

I hear you.

- The fact we have a flagship instance and that mastodon.social didn’t close signups ages ago is a huge part of the problem. They could have set a social precedent (large instances are a no-no) – they didn’t.

- When Threads federates, it will become the flagship instance.

- Eugen is basically handing the crown to Mark.

- The fact there is a crown to start with is a shortcoming of the federated model with instances that can scale indefinitely. (How else could things be done? See #SmallWeb)

I’m right in the middle of the move so I don’t have time to write anything at length on the whole “mastodon.social rolling out the red carpet for Threads/Instagram/Meta/Zuckerberg” thing.

In a nutshell:

- The *only* leverage the fediverse has over a trillion-dollar corporation is social legitimacy.

- That is exactly what the flagship instance is providing to Meta.

- It matters less whether your tiny/personal instance blocks them; given their size, you’re effectively blocking yourself.

I've just watched Violent Night.

What a film👏👏

Shades of Shaun of the Dead, Die Hard and Home Alone all jumbled up in a Santa Sack of over the top comedy action. Great fun.

@wendinoakland @veirling I put it in potato salad sometimes too!

But I'm just going say this:

I told you so. I was right on the money with this one.

@timberwraith
You're totally right, but the thing which really boggles my mind is that, even if you're a self-interested white cishet lib, surely you've got to see that Facebook just wants to fuck you. If you want to follow Uncle Whatsisface, just join Facebook. If you want fedi not to be absorbed by the Borg, don't be enthusiastic about them joining up. I get that them federating with fedi means you can see their stuff without ads... for now. But the lack of vision of all these people is, if not surprising, annoying.

Eugen, though, probably just wants to be bought out.

@intransitivelie Right? You'd think people would recognize that.

But so many don't or oddly still don't care?

Eugen is... I don't know anything about the man personally but all I'll say is that he's currently putting the "bro" in tech bro.

But I certainly wouldn't be surprised if there's some underlying motivation such as being bought out.

@timberwraith
I think what it boils down to is that in the end, most people don't care enough to put up with inconvenience. That's true of this situation and it's true of the silent majority of people who don't care one way or the other about a lot of issues. I genuinely believe that most people aren't evil at heart, they're just morally lazy. It makes sense of their hypocrisy: they want to be good, but it costs too much, so they speak one way but act another.

Which is why it's so important to destroy the idea that one can be a good person in thought rather than in deed. American protestant Christianity is really bad about this, but it's endemic to white liberals too. "I'm not a racist," they cry indignantly as they allow the systems of white supremacy to continue benefiting them. The idea that "sin" for want of a better word is all about one's beliefs or thoughts rather than one's actions is pernicious and toxic. Love is a verb, but so is hate, and maybe indifference should be one as well.

@intransitivelie That is really well stated. Thank you.

If you need these links to search for a fedipact instance:

#Fedipact - The instances blocking Zuckerberg's Threads.net

An interactive list to see which ActivityPub (Matodon, Lemmy, FireFish, etc) instances are federating with Threads.net

@timberwraith
Adding that Meta has pulled this before.
Blocking individual instances doesn’t stop their lawyers from pulling what they have before.
@timberwraith It's always so fun to see people rediscovering the ancient texts like this. @Gargron has been pretty straightforward that he has no fucks to give about the lives or safety of queer people, including the ones who step up to make his trash-fire software usable.
