@allisonwyss @orionkidder @WildTypeWriter @starbreaker @crcollins @joyce @adaddinsane I think we can learn so much from the non-dominant literary traditions and cultures. That's not to say that the dominant traditions should be ditched. Rather they should be supplemented.
@orionkidder @allisonwyss @starbreaker @crcollins @joyce @WildTypeWriter @adaddinsane I like that very much. That's where schools miss the mark, especially as students approach senior year -- schools should be encouraging the students to not only respectfully disagree with the teacher's interpretation but also to offer their differing interpretation and being able to back it up.
@orionkidder @WildTypeWriter @starbreaker @crcollins @allisonwyss @joyce @adaddinsane Here in America I think schools cling to that particular canon because it's easier, safer in a way. There's nothing to make a majority of students uncomfortable. There's nothing that parents could find objectionable. It's an approach that isn't going to serve students well at all.
@orionkidder @WildTypeWriter @starbreaker @crcollins @allisonwyss @joyce @adaddinsane It's definitely biased in favour of the canon of dead white men. What's sad is that as society and school populations become more diverse, the assigned texts don't reflect that.
@orionkidder @allisonwyss @starbreaker @crcollins @joyce @WildTypeWriter @adaddinsane I think it helped when they said that there was no wrong way to interpret. After suffering through being told that the teacher's interpretation was the only correct one it was surprising to hear that I could have a different viewpoint.
@orionkidder @allisonwyss @starbreaker @crcollins @joyce @WildTypeWriter @adaddinsane It is the worst. I remember only really learning how to interpret literature/writing when I was in college; it was a struggle for me because I never knew how. And even then the professors (Dr. Cain in creative writing and Dr. Ramsey in literary interpretation) never force-fed anything, it was mainly encouragement.
@orionkidder @WildTypeWriter @allisonwyss @starbreaker @crcollins @joyce @adaddinsane I think I had to be the only student in the class who recognized it for what it was. It wasn't even disguised! Dr. Felber was impressed
