I just deployed a Mastodon bot that posts forecasts for the most dangerous upcoming heatwaves

You can follow it at

@heatwave

To determine how dangerous a heatwave is, it uses wet-bulb temperature, which is the temperature that a body can be cooled to by evaporation

Sweating works to cool you because generally the wet-bulb temperature is lower than body temperature

As wet-bulb temperature increases and approaches body temperature, people can no longer cool themselves by sweating and will die

[2.4] #UCLA’s militarization of campus chilled academic freedom, faculty association and the right to protest university policies, thereby interfering with employee rights.
[2.3] #UCLA also overreached by closing campus activities and flooding campus with with dozens of security guards between May 6-10.
[2.2] May 16’s overbroad gag rule essentially bans any possibility of engaging these important events as a “teaching moment”.
[2.1] On May 16, for instance, the university prohibited faculty from discussing the UAW strike or any union-related matter with any employee or student.
[2] #UCLA adopted overbroad rules in the aftermath of the attack and police sweep, thereby interfering with faculty members’ exercise of their protected rights, including right to academic freedom.
[1.4] #UCLA’s conduct discourages faculty members from engaging in strikes, pickets, and other activity protected by HEERA, for fear of further violent repression.
[1.3] Like our students, faculty were brutalized and arrested in violation of the UC’s own policies of de-escalation and minimal police presence in response to protests.
