Medieval Christian tropes inflaming Islamophobic Iran war debate

The war with Iran is not just a geopolitical conflict. We see religious rhetoric used to cast strategic interests as a moral or sacred matter. US House

IwPost

"Stop patronising hijabi Muslim women by telling them to consider how other Muslim women may find hijab oppressive, as if we have not already done so.

We know how religion is weaponised in places where Muslims are the majority. We also know how your governments weaponise anti-Muslim rhetoric globally, and we understand where Islam stands in the global order.

Who are you trying to fool here?

Treating Muslim subjects as if we are insulated from that order and reminding us that “contradictions exist” is a projection of the privilege enjoyed by those who benefit from that system."

Orientalism and the Denial of Muslim Political Agency

A critique of Orientalism in Western political frameworks and how it denies Muslim political agency and dehumanises Islamic resistance.

"Muslims are not neutral subjects in the global order, and Islam is already positioned as suspect within it. The conversation about hijab does not happen in a vacuum. Take authoritarianism in Iran, for example.

Instead of seeing authoritarianism as inherently gendered and violent, as an inevitable feature of patriarchy, as a system that justifies itself by co-opting any moral framework, you view it as either “uniquely Islam”, an “Abrahamic religions issue”, or “proof that all religions are oppressive.” Why don’t you name a secular, non-authoritarian, non-misogynistic nation-state, then?"

Irã e Palestina: A violência como “dano colateral”

Reflexões a partir de Judith Butler e Edward Said.

If the Biennale puts democracies and regimes on the same level. A letter.

To the Editor – Responding in these columns to Giuliano Ferrara’s proposal to accompany the opening of the Russian regime pavilion with an initiative in favor of the culture of dissent, the Biennale’s president revealed a project for next year (not this one, to avoid offending the guests of the aforementioned pavilion): the invitation to five protagonists of today, unwelcome by their governments – the United States (?), Israel (??), China, Russia, even the EU (???). Suppressed and imprisoned dissent? It would be interesting to know which writers and artists of Israel’s democracy, unwelcome by the government, are gagged in their own country: perhaps David Grossman, or Edgar Keret, or Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, co-authors of a documentary, “No Other Land”, one of the most powerful critical works against the leadership of Israel? Certainly the reference does not apply to the books of the Palestinian anti-Zionist writer Edward Said, present in all Tel Aviv bookstores and absent in those of Islamic countries. Mystery. While awaiting his clarification, I also await a courteous invitation to Azar Nafisi, an Iranian intellectual in exile who cannot read with her persecuted students, harassed by the Basij in Tehran.

"Instead of seeing authoritarianism as inherently gendered and violent, as an inevitable feature of patriarchy, as a system that justifies itself by co-opting any moral framework, you view it as either “uniquely Islam”, an “Abrahamic religions issue”, or “proof that all religions are oppressive.” Why don’t you name a secular, non-authoritarian, non-misogynistic nation-state, then?"

Orientalism and the Denial of Muslim Political Agency

Western political discourse often treats Muslims as politically illegible, interpreting Muslim societies through secular or liberal frameworks. This critique examines how Orientalism embedded in Western political thought denies Muslim political agency and frames Islamic resistance as a threat rather than a response to imperial violence.
