Can you imagine being a little girl escaping the Gaza genocide to your mom’s home country—and it’s Ukraine?
This isn’t even the beginning of my friend Zakaria’s story.
Zakaria is a young Palestinian-Ukrainian software engineer. In a horrific massacre in November 2023, he was trapped under rubble for hours while his body was crushed and burned severely. His friend saved his life and rushed him to the hospital—which the IOF then besieged for two weeks with no food or water. He was transferred to another hospital—where his treatment was interrupted by yet another forced evacuation of what was only a field hospital, not even a full medical center.
Zakaria has had over a hundred surgeries to date. The ICRC took up his case and has written him multiple referrals for medical evacuation, which he’s waiting for.
Meanwhile, his mom and sister escaped this hell and are now in yet another warzone: just more worry for this family which is now separated across intractable borders.
Zakaria wants to unite with them in a safe place. But, most pressingly, he needs food. Yesterday, all he ate was a small piece of bread soaked in water. He’s facing shooting & airstrikes every day while still fighting for his life.
This is a new campaign vetted every which way (ID, numerous mutual trusted contacts, medical records, Red Cross referrals). I hope we can show Zakaria that he isn’t alone. https://chuffed.org/project/zakaria
