@siracusa I’ll ask my dad. The first instance I experienced was mid-‘80’s and by then it was a familiar custom. Fairly sure he picked it up from longtime friends which would have been well before the film.

I’ve mentioned the film link to him a few times over the years, he’s never claimed to have been inspired by it.

@siracusa Corn buttering in WarGames: IIRC on the commentary track, the writer or director explains they got this totally random bit from some journalism about neo-Nazis of all things! It was such an oddball detail that they stuffed it in as color for the oddball dad character.

I noted this because, while my family are not neo-Nazis, we butter our corn using this technique. Can’t knock it! Even buttering and yummy melty buttered bread.

@gruber Just checking that you’ve seen this.

I hope Apple’s next CEO can genuinely talk at the level of subclassing device driver classes.

Also find it adorable that Jobs in 1993 was still calling hard disk drives “Winchesters”.

@gruber Have you been watching “The Rehearsal”? The S2 finale is … uhh … quite something.

@daringfireball The hn audience has definitely grown and changed. In particular, there’s clearly now a large or even dominant crowd of reflexively anti-“Big Tech” readers that is reflected in the front page content & comments.

Given how much weight the algorithm gives to flags over votes, all it takes is a relatively small clique of regulars who don’t want to see “pro-Apple” DF on the front page.

@gruber Have you seen the Apple (AT&T cobrand?) iPhone 16e ad with the used car lot tube man? “At a price you can’t ignore”! What the hell are they doing to the brand? Why??

If Steve were still around… OK, OK, but this combined with the justifiable bruhaha around the “crush” ad suggests to me somebody in marketing needs to grab the wheel.

@daringfireball My theory: Gurman has a source connected to Apple’s board. The timing and character—final decisions, not arguments—of his leaks + the level of detail points that way, and it would be awkward for Apple Security to poke around the BoD & their staff.
@atpfm Also, pretty clear the film is a high concept stage play: “Your life flashes before your eyes…as a trio of keynotes with echoing themes & a constant chorus.”
@atpfm Take my next 10 years of ATP membership now. So happy you decided to do this one. Underrated in the Apple punditverse. cc: @gruber
@daringfireball I think the primary problem with the 1.0 personas is the seemingly static rendering of brows. Even Mr. Spock expressed himself with a raised eyebrow.
