The Governance Stress Test 001 🌿🏛️

I think it’d be a good fediverse start to talk about polycentric governance.

Today’s Stress Test:
Does your system support multiple, independent decision-making centers?

Elinor Ostrom noted that in a polycentric system, "many centers of decision-making that are formally independent also interact with each other in an orderly fashion."

Instead of a pyramid with a boss at the top making decisions, it's a network of autonomous groups collaborating. The Fediverse is a great example of this.

I’m curious about your offline or organizational experiences, though. When you've seen this attempted in co-ops, local governments, FOSS, or community groups, how does it usually play out?

Hello Fediverse! 👋 I am exploring the mechanics of how communities, cooperatives, and decentralized networks actually function and survive in the real world.

Welcome to The Governance Stress Test 🏛️🌿
(wicked guitar riff)

In this ongoing series, I plan on looking at the stress points of community-led systems. I will be posing questions backed by insights from thinkers who’s writings I’ve enjoyed like Elinor Ostrom, Murray Bookchin, Manuel DeLanda, Jane Jacobs, James C. Scott and others as a fun way to examine how resilient our systems truly are when it comes to dispute resolution, resource management, and autonomy.

I’m not planning on this being “The Travis Shares Theory Show”. I want to hear about your real-world experiences, case studies, and critiques.

If it looks like a mafia, and quacks like a mafia…

I am distressed when I think about how my tax dollars are going toward this cruelty and destruction of the current Iran war. So I looked up about tax resistance and found the National War Resistance Coordinating Committee website https://nwtrcc.org/resist/consequences/

Here is a snippet from their page on the consequences of resisting war taxes:
"Of course there are also terrible risks involved with not doing war tax resistance. If you continue to pay war taxes, you contribute to global insecurity, nuclear terrorism, and imperialism, you put innocent people in harm’s way, and you risk the moral injury of knowing that you are complicit in such things."

The moral injury is real...

Who has time? Who has time? But then, if we do not ever take time, how can we ever have time?
