Musician, engineer, nerd. Food motivated.

I have just discovered https://www.veeps.com and it is my new favourite thing.

I've watched two live streamed gigs this week alone - #nineinchnails as part of #vetsaid2022 from the Nationwide Stadium Ohio and #lucydacus from the Wiltern in LA.

The production quality is SO good for live streams. Highly recommend. Like, highly, highly recommend.

And they've got #sigurros next week live from Iceland...

Really love how it turned out - it's a unique sound and made the simple drum pattern way more interesting for me.
I used Logic's stock Overdrive Plugin to distort and thicken the sound a bit and make it a bit louder. I sent it to a reverb using Logic's Space Designer too, to give the sound a bit of space that tied it into the overall track. https://youtu.be/7L7HLwxh2Qk
Mic noise as percussion sample

I noticed while recording that there was a little noise from that part of the mic that almost worked like a little bit of percussion on top of the simple kick/snare pattern that I had going for the drums. I copied that little piece of audio out of the recorded vocal track, put it on its own channel, and found where I wanted to use it in the drum pattern
I used a Shure SM7b for all the vocals on the EP, and recorded them before I had that nice boom arm to mount it on, so I held the mic in hand when recording. The part of the mic that screws onto a mic stand is loose and rattley when not on a stand. https://youtu.be/IFM7VH7zg5E

Last of the production tips from my recent EP, Breaking Point. This one's about keeping your ears open for happy accidents that can be used in the song. The closing track of the EP, Take The Let Downs has a good example, where the noise of a mic rattling ending up being one of the main sounds in the drum line. Thread 🧵

Here's video to show how the fuzzed up drumline worked in the song. I layered a couple of clean kick and snare samples on top of it to get a bit of drum definition back into the mix, but the whole track was built around that distorted modular synth drumbeat...I love using distortion creatively and the moment I cranked the fuzz on this, I knew I was on to something. https://youtu.be/QSsat_m95HQ #irishmusic #musicproductiontips
Fuzz drums as a bass instrument in All Over Again

You could do this with stock distortion plugins in your DAW, or plugins like Soundtoys Decapitator/Devil-Loc too. Drum sounds with a bit of decay will work better, and the fuzzier the distortion the better too. This isn't a subtle technique...get aggressive with it!
I didn't think to record a before fuzz/after fuzz version of the actual drumline used in the song when I was writing it, so here's a quick example using a simple beat made on a Teenage Engineering OP-1 without fuzz, and then with the fuzz. You can hear the pitch of the kick and snare drums come out and it becomes a melodic part.
